South Metro Authentic Ancient Arts (AAA) promotes the study of martial arts in the traditional manner that dates back several generations.

South Metro AAA provides training in Shorin Ryu Karate and Okinawan Kobudo.

Shorin Ryu Karate is an empty hand martial arts emphasizing:

  • Learning of basic techniques (kihon)
  • Practical self defense (bunkai)
  • Systems to remember the self defense (kata, ippon kumite, yakusoku kumite)
  • Free sparring (Jiyu kumite)

Our Shorin Ryu style is called Kobayashi and comes to us from Okinawa with roots in the Shaolin Temple in China. AAA is affiliated with the worldwide program founded by Hanshi Shuguro Nakazato, 10th dan and now presided by Minoru Nakazato, 10th dan, his son and head of the Shorinkan Karate Association based in Okinawa.

Okinawan Kobudo is a weapon system developed using farming and fishing implements. Okinawa Kobudo has been handed down by the late Matayoshi Shinpo Sensei, who was considered the highest authority on Okinawan weapons in the world.

Sensei Yoshiyaki Gakiya, Matayoshi Sensei foremost student, founded the OKDR® (Okinawa Kobudo Doushi Rensei-kai®) organization to perpetuate the teachings of Matayoshi Sensei. Sensei Gakiya was forced to retire in 2010 due to illness and passed the responsibility to Sensei Stolsmark. Teaching from the OKDR® encompasses the use of 14 different weapons as taught by Matayoshi Shinpo Sensei.

Sensei Stolsmark, who founded the AAA Karate and Kobudo Studio to teach both arts, holds an 8th dan in each and has been teaching in Waukesha Wisconsin for the past 25+ years.

Our primary instructor François Auradon (5th dan Karate and 4th dan Kobudo)
trains under Sensei Martin (6th dan Karate and 5th dan Kobudo). Sensei Martin is a student of Sensei Stolsmark (8th dan Karate, 9th dan Kobudo).
